Happy Memorial Day!

Today we remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedom...

This is my uncle Jimmy. I never got to meet him. Having a son of my own I can't imagine the hurt my grandparents faced when they got the news of his death. I am proud of his memory, his service and his sacrifice.

May we never forget...

Let's Party: Linky Series for June

You may have seen my post a few Sunday's ago where I was in bloggy limbo. Thank you to EVERYONE that left a comment on that post! I took some time over the past week or so to reflect on what I enjoy about my blog and what I want it to be all about. I decided it was time to bring the FUN back. So I'm going to test drive a few ideas in June...

Let's Party: Practice Hospitality June 2010

I'm officially declaring June "Practice Hospitality" month. Let's party each week with the following themes:

Monday, June 7th - Hospitality Starts At the Door - How are you greeting your guests? (examples: door decor, curb appeal, entryway, etc.)

Monday, June 14th - Special Touches - How do you make your guests feel special? (examples: guest bath, guest bedroom, welcome signs, party favors, etc.)

Monday, June 21st - Go-To Recipes - What is your go-to recipe for guests? (Share your favorite recipe to wow your guests.)

Monday, June 28th - Practice Hospitality - How did you practice hospitality this month? (Share a dinner party, a guest visit, a meal taken to a friend, etc.)

Doesn't this sound like fun??? Please help me spread the news - I would love to get lots of new ideas to help us practice hospitality!!!

Garden Party: Thursday, June 3rd

Before we get started with all the hospitality fun, I want to host a Garden Party one week from today. I'm getting a late start on my containers this month. My goal is to add a few touches to my porch and back patio over the holiday weekend. To help keep me accountable, let's share the beauty from our gardens (veggie, landscaping, container, etc.) next Thursday!!

Party Gathering: Updated Weekly

Finally I'm trying to bring organization back into my life. I have been terribly inefficient the past several months. I always want to join Amanda's Decorating Dilemmas Party but I always let it sneak up on me. I thought it would be neat to put up a weekly Party Gathering post to help us keep track of other upcoming parties. Hopefully this will help keep me on track.

If you have a party planned in the next month or so, please shoot me the information so I can add to my Party Gathering Post.

Whew! June is going to be busy but I'm excited to have a plan!!

Let's get ready to party!

My Creative Kid

I can entertain my child for hours on end by giving him a few odds and ends and letting him create. He's mighty creative and especially loves to dress up. No fancy costumes necessarily needed. Here are a few of his more recent shenanigans...

Meet BBC, Greek God of Silliness...

aka "A Dark Knight"

(Yes, those are MY boots and scarf)

He is obsessed with Santa Claus. This particular photo was snapped in MARCH. I asked him to separate the laundry with towels in one basket. The next thing I know he's asking DH if he will be his reindeer... Very. Funny. Moment.

Well hello, Buckaroo!

Whooaaa, Nellie!
I think you forgot something!
The end...

It's gonna be a FUN summer!

Monday Hodge Podge

Monday Hodge Podge: birds, bar, beauty, bliss & BBC...

There is sadness at the Southern Fried mansion...the birds are not doing well. We have lost three so far. Two are still holding on. Two eggs are still unhatched. It's nature, I know, but still sad to watch. I now remember why I usually shoo them away in the spring...

On a happier note, K and I went to the opening of the new Piano Bar in Fort Smith on Friday. I loved the eclectic mix of folks there - young, old, couples, friends, cowboys, city-folk - a fun time for all. We sang at the top of our lungs! The fun really kicked in when they opened the garage doors to the outside. I loved to watch the reaction of folks walking past. We have another girl's night out planned this Thursday - any other SATC fans out there???

My granny recently had to move in with my mom. So on Saturday I picked her up and we went to her home. I was gathering mossy rocks for my new flower bed in the back yard. I realized this weekend how frail (body and mind) she is getting.

I took a little extra time to visit with her. There was a sweet beauty in the moment. This photo is a good reminder for me - beautiful old-fashioned gladiolas juxtaposed against a dilapidated fence (and of course plenty of moss). When I snapped the photo I didn't even notice that container of who knows what...things such as this didn't matter.

I cannot express to you how wonderfully blissful it is to wake up today knowing that LOST is a wrap! I had a love/hate relationship with that show. DH wanted me to watch with him after he got hooked early in the first season. It has been our weekly TV date since.

The show was definitely interesting. I loved all the characters - especially Sawyer and Hurley. But the show also drove me nuts. I knew after every episode that I would be left wondering and wanting more. It was pure torture each week.

I knew I wouldn't be satisfied with the ending so I didn't care how it ended. I was just ready for it to end! What about you? Did you watch? If so what did you think about the finale?

And to wrap up my Monday Hodge Podge, I can't believe BBC will be a kindergarten graduate in just two weeks. So I ask you, now what do we do??? Ha! What are some good ideas for us for the summer?

How was your weekend? What are your plans for the summer?

Southern Fried Friend Friday: #LRTweetup

This SFF Friday I have a confession to make. I'm chicken.

Several months ago I was introduced to the #LRtweetup. This is a community established to "connect the Central Arkansas Twitter Community." One of the main goals of establishing myself in the online community (blog, facebook, twitter, etc.) is to connect with others.

On a daily basis I chat with folks in the community via Twitter. I put myself out there by starting conversations with these people online. Most reply to continue the conversation and I have felt very welcomed. I introduce myself to them in the grocery store even when I am not wearing makeup.

These people are a hoot. They care about our community. They care about our safety. They care about each other. And that makes me care.

The folks of the #LRtweetup meet formally once each month and informally more often that that. In the past the meeting times have conflicted with previous commitments for me. I wanted to attend one of the meetings and connect in real life but always had a reason for not doing so.

This week the first ever LRtweeties were held in Little Rock. The LRtweeties were self-described as "some of the most ridiculous Twitter awards we can imagine!" My calendar was free for the evening. This was my chance to attend my first ever event. I was going to attend up until the very last minute. I let my nerves get the better of me. I allowed feelings of insecurity and doubt to override reason.

The more I thought about this the more I realized that in my insecurity I actually rejected the "friends" I had made over the past few months. They were welcoming me (and ANYONE who wanted to come). I should have attended if for nothing more than to honor all the hard work that had gone into the fun evening.

And now I sit at my computer on SFF Friday wishing I had put myself out there. I totally thought I was bluebird material, but in the end I was only chicken...

Are you hiding behind your computer or smart phone like I did this week? Let's commit to putting ourselves out there IRL as much as we do online. Whadya say?

Quick Lime & Chili Quesadillas with
New Tyson Grilled Chicken Breast Strips

I'm giddy with excitement because today I am sharing one of my favorite summer recipes, Lime & Chili Chicken Quesadillas, made simple with the New Tyson Grilled Chicken Breast Strips!

A few years ago I had a hankering for a lime and chili chicken quesadilla and I came up with a marinade. For yummiest results, I grilled, rested, and sliced the chicken before making individual quesadillas. Tasty, but cumbersome. So I was thrilled when I was asked to review Tyson's new product!

I added about half the bag of chicken to a non-stick skillet and sprinkled with about 1 teaspoon ground cumin and 1 teaspoons chili powder. I allowed that to brown on one side, flipped and seasoned the other side with equal amounts of seasoning.

Once the chicken was warmed and browned on both sides, I squeezed the juice of three limes onto the chicken and allowed it to cook a minute or two longer. To assemble the quesadillas, I lightly buttered a skillet, filled a flour tortilla with the chicken and cheddar cheese and folded to brown on each side.

Since the process was so fast, I had a little extra time to channel my inner chef. I painted the plates with a jalapeno and and a chipotle sauce (like my favorite restaurant).

I served with black beans and rice garnished with fresh yellow bell pepper and sour cream squiggles. (I'm really getting into the chef role at this point!)

Pure yumminess and a fraction of the time it usually takes to conjure up this meal.

My boys (DH and my toughest critic, BBC) both gave it two thumbs up!

Here's the picture of the chicken I used. I found my bag at Target in the frozen goods section. It was priced around $7.50 plus tax and I was able to get two meals out of the bag for my family of three. That is a pretty reasonable cost considering the time savings.

I will definitely be using this product again in the future. When time allows I prefer to cook from scratch but hey - life happens sometimes and this gives busy moms a head-start. I found the chicken to be lean, easy to prepare, and flavorful. I didn't get a chance to check the sodium count before my husband tossed the bag - that was my main concern. I will check into that and update.

Would you like to try this new product? The best news of all is that I have been given FREE product coupons for a few of my lucky readers! This giveaway will close at noon, CDT, on Friday, May 21, 2010. To earn an entry into the random drawing, simply leave a comment on this post! That's easy and in keeping with the product!

Ironically, I am joining up with Jen over at Tasty Tuesday. She has an interesting discussion going on about our dependency on technology in our lives. I crack up that I'm totally cheating on dinner while she is talking about having her own chickens and grinding her own wheat. Come join the discussion and check out the other tasty recipes!

The Birds and Dogs?

I reported two weeks ago that this place had gone to the birds. Here's an update on the House Finch family that have found home on my front door...

As of Sunday two babies had hatched. I caught this sweet picture.

Today it looks like there are at least four if not five hatched babies.

Here are some baby Mockingbirds in a bush near the garage. I love Mockingbirds - they have an ornery personality and their serenades are cheerful in the evening. I wasn't quick enough to catch any other pictures of these babies - they became full-fledged quickly!

So interestingly, as my house has gone to the birds, my best friend's house had gone to the dogs! She has two little Schnauzers. She (K) was babysitting her mom's Schnauzer on Friday night. She went to dinner and a movie and came home to...

an extra dog in her house!!! Look at how huge it is compared to her tiny Schnauzers! Her back yard is fenced. The gate was locked.

The only explanation was that the dog dug under the fence and came in the tiny doggie door. I think she was lucky that she fit through the door without getting stuck.

K snapped a picture on her phone and went around to the neighbors to find the owner - she had never seen this dog before -ever! The neighbors behind her were watching the dog (foster type thing or something). They had the NERVE to to tell K she was scared of the storms and wanted her to keep the dog overnight. Let's just say that didn't happen.

So while I feel a little intruded upon by the birds on the front door I think I would totally freak out if I found a strange animal, friendly or not, in my home.

Has anything like this ever happened to you or someone you know?

~Southern Fried Gal

p.s. Thank you to everyone that left sweet and encouraging words on my post last night. I needed them - each and every one! I'm feeling better focused today. Hope you have a wonderful week!

Southern Fried Sundays:
Can I Be Vulnerable Today?

Today's Southern Fried Sundays edition is running down to the wire. I have been in a funk today - ever get like that? I haven't been able to shake it. I didn't go to church today so maybe I'm feeling a little spiritually bankrupt? BBC will be out of school in a few weeks and I guess I have a little anxiety about being ready for that - is that normal?

I am also feeling a little bit of a block coming on in regard to this blog. I feel like I've lost my way on it the past few weeks. What is the purpose of this blog? Is it a worthy purpose to continue? Does that purpose align with the friends that I have attracted to read it? What features or topics do my readers enjoy most?

And so on the questions go off in my mind. I guess the best way to describe today is that I've lost my peace. After writing all this at this late hour, I felt led to Lamentations 3...particularly this passage:

17 You have moved my soul far from peace;
I have forgotten prosperity.
18 And I said, “My strength and my hope
Have perished from the LORD.”
19 Remember my affliction and roaming,
The wormwood and the gall.
20 My soul still remembers
And sinks within me.
21 This I recall to my mind,
Therefore I have hope.
22 Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed,
Because His compassions fail not.
23 They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.
24 “ The LORD is my portion,” says my soul,
“ Therefore I hope in Him!”

Wow! Amazing that I think I am so unique and here are my thoughts almost verbatim spilled out in the Word. Thanks for allowing me to be vulnerable.

Cheerful posts coming Monday and Tuesday (with a giveaway), I promise...

Have a blessed week.

Southern Fried Friend Friday:
Cupcakes, Birds, & Winner, Oh My!

This week I want to highlight Sumo's Sweet Stuff blog. She is crafty, creative, & kind. She hosts a couple of fun parties each week. This week on Mouth-Watering Wednesday she featured S'Mores Cupcakes - they look divine don't you agree? I can't wait to try these with BBC! Please pay her a visit and let her know the Southern Fried Gal sent you her way.

Remember my friends on the porch? In the last update there were only four eggs. Now there are seven! It will be interesting to see how many hatch and survive. That is a tiny nest! I guess the economy is even hitting the birds this year. This momma bird likes to spice up her nest - notice the fuzz and Hershey Kisses ribbon? Nice touches!

And finally - I remembered to get that random number for the $50 Southern Living at HOME gift certificate. The number is 27 and the winner is Debbie from Love the Decor. Congratulations! Please contact me to claim your prize!

What new or old friends are you buzzing about this week?

Have a fabulous weekend!

Willow House Wednesdays: Nola Party Bucket

Today I want to take a closer look at the Nola Party Bucket with Stand (page 9, spring catalog). I think this is a MUST HAVE for spring and summer entertaining. I'm in love with the generous size and classic styling. I'm going to share some ideas and then I have a favor to ask of you!

The obvious use for this bucket is filled with ice and beverages. I love how our stylists used the Ashford Bedside Sets (page 29) filled with various drinks in this presentation. I also like that two liter drinks can snuggle nicely into this bucket.

A good friend and fellow consultant, Bridget Price, shared the idea to use the stand and coaster as a serving tray. You could still fill the bucket with ice and drinks and then display other drinks or glasses on the stand. This way you are getting twice the bang for your buck!

I am finally disassembling my spring centerpiece hoping for new inspiration to come my way. While doing so I threw a few of the items onto this tray and you can see how easily a centerpiece can come together. Fabulous!

I love how the bucket looks in the guest bath filled with towels. Very welcoming!

I LOVE this piece and think everyone should have at least one. I also want to feel good about the investment my customers make in this piece. I have shared four ideas but that is just a drop in the bucket, heh.

Now I need your help! My goal is to come up with at least TWENTY uses. Let's get creative together! What comes to mind for you? Thank you for your help!!!

Another Day at the Park

I LOVE rewarding BBC for good behavior with time at the park. This week we are spotlighting Riverfront Park. It's nestled just behind the River Market area in downtown Little Rock.

You are probably going to notice a theme with these parks - they are mostly natural and that's the way I like it! I have wonderful memories of being outside as a kid and just experiencing natural fun such as climbing on rocks, exploring the water, daydreaming in the trees, and so on. The parks in Arkansas are amazing!

I love that Riverfront Park has trails and rocks to maneuver over, under, and through...

To the north of the park is the River. Sometimes we go sit on the bank and watch a barge mosey down the river. If we are lucky we will spot an official patrol in progress.

To the south of the park is the city. I love the juxtaposition of the city against nature - breathtaking!

There are a few things you would find in a normal park such as this long slide. Wheee!

Best part of all, no germ infested plastic stairs or play areas - ick! Oh and BBC gets to burn plenty of energy while here! He's always guaranteed a good night's rest afterwards!

It is supposed to be a beautiful week here in Arkansas! We should be able to log plenty of park time this week. Woo hoo!

What's on your agenda for the week?

Southern Fried Friend Friday

Friends - there is nothing like them! I can never have enough! That's why I like to share who I'm meeting in the blogosphere.

Suzanne over at Southern Inspiration does a really neat Friday series called Friday Fives where she asks five questions and everyone responds in the comments. It's a great way to get to know some folks a little better!

I still am in love with Amanda over at Serenity Now and her Dishing It Parties. The theme this go around was moms. You really get to know a lot about a gal when she shares about her mom or about being a mommy. I always connect with new folks through this party.

Finally, do you use Twitter? I find myself connecting with lots of folks and finding new interesting blogs via that resource. I would LOVE to follow you! Please leave me a comment with your Twitter ID so I can check you out! I'm @southrnfriedgal.

How do you connect with new folks online?

Hope you have a fabulous weekend!!!

Willow House Wednesdays: Hospitality Ideas

Welcome to another Willow House Wednesday! This week I am sharing more ideas from fellow Arkansas consultants. When I was pulling these ideas together it hit me that they are all hospitality based!

Make guests feel special in a BIG way! I love how Sue Fess turned a Galveston Hurricane (page 37) into a BIG centerpiece for this game table. She is the expert at gathering twigs and flowers from her garden and throwing together an inexpensive and GORGEOUS centerpiece. It always makes me feel special knowing that she lovingly clipped her own flowers to display for me (and her other guests) to enjoy.

If you are having overnight guests, how wonderful would this be in the guest bathroom. Make your guests feel like they have escaped to a spa by rolling up towels and placing them in our Farmhouse Tiered Basket (page 72). Add bottled water, hotel size shampoos, soaps, loofahs, etc. to enhance the spa experience!

Live near a beach, lake, or pool? How cute are these beach towels rolled up in our Entertaining Bucket and Tray (page 10) for guests?

On a side note, at the consignment store last week we had a pair of Polo swim trunks priced at $4. The lady that bought them said she scoops up extra swim suits when she finds a deal so when guests come over without a suit she can offer them various options. LOVE this idea!

Treat guests to a coffee house experience each morning with our Covington Serving Tray (page 25), Cinnabar Canisters (page 65), and Italian Stitch Coffee Cups (page 8)! I love that you can feature items under the glass in the tray. If you were having a girlfriend over for a chat, you could put pictures of y'all under the glass to prompt conversation around great memories!

What products do you use for hospitality in your home? Please browse the spring catalog and let me know which items shout hospitality to you.

Don't forget to check out the discontinued product list - all orders $50 or more will ship directly to your home! Contact me for details.

Practice hospitality this week!
